Changes in sport and physical activity participation for adolescent females: a longitudinal study

Abstract: BackgroundParticipation in sport and physical activity is reported to decline during adolescence, particularly for females. However we do not have a clear understanding of changes in the context (i.e., modes and settings) of participation throughout adolescence. This study investigated longitudinal changes in physical activity participation and the specific modes and settings of physical activity, together with cross-sectional comparisons, for two age cohorts of female adolescents.MethodsSurvey of 729 adolesce… Show more

“…Unadjusted measures of PA, reported before and after the transition, or change in PA across a transition, were converted to a standard metric of moderate‐to‐vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in minutes per day (min/day). Where continuous PA data were reported, but not in an appropriate format, ie, graphically, or without standard errors reported (two papers), we contacted the authors to request further information. For conversion from MET‐minutes to MVPA we divided by 5, assuming a MET‐value of 5 for MVPA, in line with a previous approach .…”

“…For example, research suggests that dropout is particularly evident in females as they progress through adolescence, so age and sex are important factors to consider. 17 Additionally, dropout may differ between recreational and competitive sport environments. 3 Perceived competence is also considered a key determinant of youth physical activity 18 with a recent systematic review by Crane and Temple 6 indicating that a lack of perceived competence was the second most common intrapersonal variable associated with dropout.…”

“…There are recent researches in relation to the identification of patterns of physical activities which are positive for health [3]. More specifically, some recent studies have shown the association between habits of physical activity in young people and being physically active in adulthood [4,5]. Moreover, it…”
