The aim of this study was to determine the semen quality, sexual behaviour and testosterone (T) levels in Saint Croix rams under semi-desert climate conditions. Sixteen rams (70.6 ± 12.5 kg; 24.1 ± 0.3 months old) were randomly divided into a grazing group (GG, n = 8) and a supplemented group (supplemented individually with 1 kg.d −1 of concentrate (156 g CP.kg −1 DM and 2.5 Mcal EM.kg −1 DM). SG, n = 8). Each group grazed on buffel, grass. Every two weeks, semen was collected, and sexual behaviour traits were evaluated. SG rams had greater body weight (P < 0.0001) and greater semen quality than the GG rams. SG rams had greater values for reaction time and lateral approaches than GG rams (P < 0.0001). No interaction was found between treatment and month for T concentration (P < 0.05); the SG rams had greater values during most of the months, but GG rams had greater values during September. Month had a significant effect on T concentration (P < 0.05) with the highest values in autumn. It can be concluded that Saint Croix rams are able to adapt to adverse environmental conditions and that supplementary feed prior to the mating season improves ram sexual behaviour.

Infertility and subfertility are among the global challenges of our time. Fertility in livestock farming is not only biologically important, it is also economically important. The aim of this study was to study the effect of these factors on sperm chromatin nucleus and to assess the impact of the fragmentation index degree on bull reproductive performance. The influence of abiotic factors such as ambient temperature, the level of geomagnetic activity and the biotic factorinfectious diseases of male reproductive organs-was studied. At high ambient temperatures (28-30°C), the proportion of sperm with damaged DNA increased by 70% compared to temperatures below 15°C. A Multivariate Analysis Of Variance (MANOVA) confirmed the influence of the geomagnetic activity factor on the degree of nuclear DNA fragmentation in bull sperm cells (level p<0.05). During the summer period, on days with increased geomagnetic activity, the Nuclear DNA fragmentation index in the samples studied was 20.5%. In some of the samples studied, this index exceeded 38% and the coefficient of variation for this index reached 44%. The proportion of sperm cells with abnormal movement also increased during geomagnetic activity. The content of such sperm cells reached 9.1% in bull semen ejaculates obtained during the winter period. More than 12% of sperm had non-progressive movement in summer semen obtained with a K-index ≥5.0, which was 83.8% higher than with a K-index ≤1.0. High geomagnetic activity and temperature and infection of the reproductive organs lead to pathological changes in spermatozoa, an increase in the proportion of spermatozoa with damaged nuclear DNA and a decrease in fertility.

ContentsThe aim of this study was to determine the influence of the season of birth on the body weight, testicular size, testosterone concentrations, semen output and sexual behaviour in Saint Croix male lambs. Thirty-three lambs were born in spring (n = 10), summer (Sum; n = 12) or autumn (n = 11). Body weight and the scrotal circumference were weekly recorded; semen was also weekly collected by electroejaculation; and sexual behaviour towards oestrous ewes was weekly evaluated. Data were recorded from 15 to 33 weeks of age. The reproductive development of Saint Croix male lambs differed according to the period in which they were born. More lambs born in spring than in summer and autumn achieved puberty during this study and were also more precocious in semen production and displayed sexual behaviour earlier. Lambs born in summer delayed their semen production; however, season-related negative effects were less pronounced at the end of the study than in autumn born lambs born.In conclusion, despite the apparently low seasonality of the breed, Saint Croix male lambs showed in this study a seasonal pattern in their reproductive development at least until they achieve the puberty.
