Changes in Sexual Behaviour and Semen Quality Associated with Age and Type of Enclosure of Saint Croix Rams in Different Seasons of the Year

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate sexual behaviour and semen quality of St. Croix ram lambs bred in a semi-desert region. In Experiment 1, 24 yearling rams were assigned to two groups: T1 with 12 males confined for 11 months; T2 with 12 males confined individually for the same period of time. In Experiment 2, 20 four-month-old ram lambs were assigned to two groups of 10 animals each. In each experiment, sexual behaviour and semen quality were evaluated every 2 weeks over 11 months. In Experiment 1, r… Show more

“…Sexual behaviour, measured as the number of sniffing, flehmen, lateral approaches and mounts with ejaculate, decreased from May to September. These results are consistent with those reported by Santos et al (2015), in the same breed, where they report that during the summer months, sexual behaviour of adult and young rams was also reduced. However, despite this low sexual behaviour, it is interesting to notice the ability of the Saint Croix rams to establish strategies and dosage of their mating.…”

“…The influence of surrounding temperature as an abiotic factor on the degree of fragmentation of ram sperm DNA has been studied and the relationship between sperm quality and the degree of fragmentation of chromatin DNA has been analyzed. Data on the influence of ambient temperature on ram sperm quality are consistent with data from (Belkadi et al, 2017;Santos et al, 2015). High ambient temperatures can lead to disruption of individual sperm cells, reducing their biological integrity and to complete or partial infertility (Salces-Ortiz et al, 2015).…”

“…This reinforces the concept that although in general, hair breeds are less seasonal than wool breeds (Aguirre, Orihuela, & Vázquez, ), there are consistent effects of the period of the year in their reproductive activity. In the same direction, it has been recently reported that male lambs and 1‐year‐old Saint Croix rams had greater testes and displayed better sexual behaviour in Aut and winter than in Spr (Santos et al, ). In the present study, we expanded the results to the influence of birth of season on reproductive development.…”
