Changes in self-reported sleep duration with age - a 36-year longitudinal study of Finnish adults

Abstract: Background Sleep deprivation is often claimed to be increasingly common, but most studies show small changes in sleep duration over the last decades. Our aim was to analyze long-term patterns in self-reported sleep duration in a population-based cohort. Methods Members of the Older Finnish Twin Cohort have responded to questionnaires in 1975 (N = 30,915 individuals, response rate 89%, mean age 36 years), 1981 (24,535, 84%, 41 years),… Show more

“…Changing sleep characteristics are a natural phenomenon throughout an individual’s life. Previous studies of sleep characteristics according to changes in the life cycle and environment, via longitudinal monitoring, reported that sleep time decreased in females with aging from 0.9 min [ 49 ] to up to 0.11 h [ 50 ]. In comparison, the mean sleep time in this study at around four months showed a substantial fall from 6.39 (±1.76) h to 6.05 (±1.68) h. Such a sudden change in sleep characteristics is known to increase the rate of morbidity in various diseases, including cardiovascular diseases and metabolic syndromes [ 51 ], while increasing the mortality of underlying diseases [ 51 ].…”

“…Previous studies have shown that not only physical factors, such as gender, fatigue, and physical activities, but also environmental factors, such as marital status and occupation, have statistically significant influences on changes in sleep characteristics [ 49 ]. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the factors related to sudden changes in sleep characteristics, as reported in this study.…”

“…First, although sleep data were collected prospectively, limiting memory bias, sleep duration might be overestimated because it was assessed by self-administered parental questionnaires and reflects more the time spent in bed than the effective sleep duration. Nevertheless, self-administered sleep questionnaires are still valid and widely used in large epidemiological studies ( Galland et al., 2012 ; Hublin et al., 2020 ; Tham et al., 2021 ). Second, we focused on night sleep duration trajectories as did others ( Touchette et al., 2007 ; Zheng et al., 2020 ), but day sleep duration still varies in this age range.…”

“…In addition, we examined associations with short sleep duration as a sensitivity analysis, as short sleep correlates both with sleep quality and insomnia symptoms. Trends in sleep quality and duration over time in the same cohort have already been extensively investigated [15,16]. The items included in all four surveys, with the distributions for each trait at each time point are reported in Table 1 below.…”
