Changes in Multisensory Integration Following Brief State Induction and Longer-Term Training with Body Scan Meditation

Abstract: Objectives The objective was to examine the impact of state and trait mindfulness cultivated through body scan meditation, on bodily multisensory integration, in order to explore effects of increased non-judgmental/accepting attention to ambiguous bodily sensations. Methods Multisensory integration was operationalised through the rubber hand illusion, which was measured through subjective questionnaires, proprioceptive drift and skin conductance to perceiv… Show more

“…Policies investing in mindfulness trainings for the general population and in encouraging its regular practice may favour this process. In fact, exercising mindfulness meditation, especially through practices that revolve around focusing on bodily sensations, has been found to be positively associated with body awareness and with a more stable representation of one's body [89][90][91][92][93][94]. At the same time, future studies are needed to clarify which factors operate in synergy with BSC components during decisionmaking processes and whether and in what way COVID-19 could impact this process.…”

“…To our best knowledge, only one study has adopted an experimental approach. Guthrie et al (2022) conducted a study where they tested the effects of a state 20-min body-scan meditation and longer-term 2-week body-scan training. They found a reduction in the illusion after the 2 weeks training compared to a control group.…”
