“…The finding of a weak, significantly positive correlation between platelet MAO activity and age is in line with some earlier findings (Nies et al, 1974) and in disagreement with other (Murphy et al, 1976). Thus, as older patients could be expected to have somewhat higher platelet MAO activity and as the depressed patients with pain were significantly older, the age difference can not explain the finding of lower platelet MAO activity in depressed patients with pain as a symptom.…”

The time increase demonstrated by our older Ss on the interference task could be another behavioral measure of inhibitory difficulty in the elderly; that is, problems with the Stroop interference task may represent deficits in inhibiting input of one stimulus dimension (words) while one is attending to a second stimulus characteristic (color).…”

“…First, as the metabolizing of DA to DOPAC is mediated by monoamine oxidase (MAO), one likely explanation for this accelerated conversion is the increased concentration of MAO and/or enhanced MAO activity. Increased MAO activity has been demonstrated to occur in aged animals (Bhaskaran and Radha, 1983;Fowler et al, 1980;Nies et al, 1973), and it may also occur in the remaining DA neurons after 6-OHDA lesion. Second, under physiological conditions, most of the newly synthesized DA are stored in vesicles to protect them from degradation by MAO, while the majority of DA formed in the lesioned striatum cannot be protected because the storage capacity is diminished by 6-OHDA lesion (Spencer and Wooten, 1984;Brannan et al, 1990).…”
