Changes in metabolic parameters in patients with severe mental illness over a 10-year period: A retrospective cohort study

Abstract: Increasing body mass index relates to increasing rates of dysglycaemia over time. Measures to encourage weight reduction should be key strategies to reduce dysglycaemia rates in severe mental illness. Prescribing statins may have been effective in improving the lipid profile in this group.

“…Importantly, our results provide the first evidence that cholesterol concentration is reduced by over 1 mmol/L for up to 2 years, which suggests that medication adherence is sustained. This finding is important because it suggests—in agreement with other studies54 55—that statin use can result in substantial reductions in cholesterol among populations with high antipsychotic usage. Furthermore, other studies in the general population have shown that the impact of statin prescribing on CVD events increases with extended use: reductions of 0.6 mmol/L of total cholesterol are associated with a 7% decrease in ischaemic heart disease during the first 2 years of therapy and >20% decreases thereafter 56.…”

“…A 10-year follow-up study of 1307 individuals (mean age 56 years) on general practice severe mental illness registers in Cheshire (UK) demonstrated the progression over time with respect to some of these problems (Heald et al, 2016). Mean baseline BMI increased from 28.6 kg/m 2 to 31.0 kg/m 2 ( P =0.0002).…”

“…There also exists a clear relationship between all classes of psychotropic medications and increased risk of disease in people with SPMI (Robson & Gray 2007). In particular, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome, which indicates increased risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke, is high for people diagnosed with an SPMI, as a result of prescribed antipsychotic medications received (Cunningham et al 2014;Heald et al 2016).…”
