Changes in metabolic hormones after bariatric surgery and their predictive impact on weight loss

Abstract: LSG is the most effective procedure for improvement of beta-cell function. High baseline ghrelin in the LSG group and an adequate 1st month increase in the LAGB group are associated with greater weight loss. Validation studies are required to confirm the role of ghrelin in predicting weight loss after bariatric surgery, but also in selecting candidates for specific bariatric procedures.

“…The sample size of these trials ranged from 10 to 245 patients. Fourteen trials were nonrandomized, prospective observational studies, [16,19,2225,27,28,33,37,39,41,45,47] 18 were retrospective cohort studies, [17,18,20,21,26,2932,3436,38,40,4244,46] and 1 was a prospective RCT. [48] The improvement or remission of diabetes and hypertension is recorded in different follow-up periods, and all patients were followed for less than 4 years.…”

“…It is also characterized as a state of low GH function resulting from blunted GH secretion or increased GH clearance [ 14 , 15 ]. Significant weight loss not only improves glycemic control and fatty liver disease [ 16 , 17 ] but is also accompanied by an amelioration or restoration of GH metabolism [ 18 20 ].…”

“…The mechanisms of TSH decrease after bariatric surgery remain incompletely understood and remain to be further elucidated. One of the most plausible explanations is the decrease of leptin levels following bariatric surgery [31]. With decreasing amount of body fat, the decreasing leptin circulating levels [32] reduce the central stimulation of the thyroid axis [29,30] and promote a decrease of TSH.…”
