Changes in laryngopharyngeal reflux after uvulopalatopharyngoplasty for obstructive sleep apnea: An observational study

Abstract: Purpose: To estimate laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) changes after uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) using the reflux symptom index (RSI) and reflux finding score (RFS) questionnaires. Methods: A total of 91 participants were recruited and divided into three groups: control (n = 27), OSA mild to moderate (n = 29), and OSA severe (n = 35) groups according to polysomnography. All participants completed the preoperative RSI, and underwent blinded evaluation on videolaryngoscopy usin… Show more

“…Eine weitere Ursache des OSAS kann ein meist unbemerkter nächtlicher Laryngopharyngealreflux (LPR) sein 24 , 25 . Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass bei 12% der Refluxpatienten gleichzeitig ein OSAS vorlag, wohingegen dies nur bei 5% der Patienten ohne Reflux der Fall war.…”

“…Overall, significant decreases in mean RSI score were observed after CPAP treatment. It was also shown that uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) can improve RSI score, potentially by alleviating upper airway collapse and corresponding pulse of negative intrathoracic pressure and positive abdominal pressure [ 90 ]. OSA and acid reflux may also be the contributors to chronic cough in patients with OSA and concomitant acid reflux [ 91 ].…”

“…Ten articles 9,22,24,26,29,33,36,39,42,43 compared the clinical characteristics of patients with LPR-positive OSAHS and LPR-negative OSAHS (Table 2). Six studies 10,25,[27][28][29]36 provided Spearman's or Pearson's CORs between RSI score and AHI score. Four studies 8,25,27,28 provided Spearman's or Pearson's CORs between RSI and AHI scores.…”
