“…While PAL, C4H, and 4CL play pivotal roles in the biosynthesis of plant secondary compounds and the levels of these three enzymes seem to be highly regulated in response to a wide variety of developmental and environmental signals (Ragg et al 1981;Hahlbrock and Scheel, 1989;Achnine et al, 2004), no detailed reports were found concerning the changes in these enzymes during fruit development. During the development of fruits such as strawberries, grapes, apples and pears, PAL activity had two peaks, one at the early development of the young fruit and another during the ripening phase (Kataoka et al, 1983;Blankenship and Vnrath, 1987;Cheng and Breen, 1991;Viljoen and Hoysame, 1995). Hrazdina et al (1984) found that during development and maturation of de Chaunac grape berries, PAL showed two different stages of activity, and that activities of C4H and 4CL paralleled the PAL changes when the development process reached its final stages and at the beginning of maturation.…”
