Changes in Humoral Immunity Occurring During the Early Stages of Experimental Pneumococcus Infection

Abstract: A study was made of the changes in humoral immunity occurring during the early phases of experimental pneumococcus infection in the dog and cat. The methods devised by Robertson and Sia were employed to demonstrate the presence of anti-pneumococcus properties in the serum of animals naturally resistant to this micro-organism. It was found that with a generalized and overwhelming infection accompanied by early blood invasion, there was a prompt and rapid decrease in the concentration of natural humoral immune b… Show more

“…Second, marked bacteremia with persistence of humoral immunity; 1-26S and 2-0. This phenomenon was observed earlier by TerreU (9). Third, marked bacteremia with loss of pneumococcidal-promoting power of the serum; 2-02S, 1-28S, and 5-8S.…”

“…The phagocytosis that occurs in sulfonamide-treated animals begins within 18 hours of the start of treatment and has been noted in animals with bacteremia. Both of these facts make it seem unlikely that type-specific antibody is present in the blood of these animals at the time that the phagocytosis occurs (32,33). Since the natural defense of the lung against pneumococcal infection appears to depend largely upon phagocytosis, an attempt has been made to analyze further the factors responsible for the occurrence of the phagocytic reaction.…”

“…None were found before the 3rd day after recovery in 4 dogs tested. Thus, here as well as in spontaneous recovery (8,26), the role of these substances cannot be evaluated.…”
