The study was conducted to examine changes in haematological and their eventual associations with parasitological parameters and clinical responses in experimentally infected Ethiopian highland sheep by increased doses of Haemonchus contortus infective larvae (L3). A total of 24 male sheep were allotted in to four equal groups: a single dose of 2 000, 4 000, or 6 000 infective larvae of Haemonchus contortus (L3) was orally administered to animals from the first 3 groups whereas the last group not treated and served as negative control. The faecal egg count (EPG), the body weight as well as haematological parameters (haematocrit and eosinophils counts) and proteinaemia were measured throughout the experimental 13 weeks long period and worm burden and sex ratio were assessed at necropsy. The infection was confirmed by the occurrence of the faecal egg excretion and by the presence of adult worms in abomasums. All Haemonchus infected sheep exhibited a progressive and severe anaemia characterized by marked reductions of haemoglobin concentration and haematocrit, associated with weight loss and growth retardation and on the contrary with strongly and transiently increased eosinophil population compared to control animals (P<0.01). Except for proteinemia, parasitological, clinical and haematological alterations were significantly proportional to the parasite load. Moreover, the eosinophil counts, the adult worm population and the egg excretion positively and significantly correlated together, whereas they were negatively associated with body weight, proteinemia and the other haematological parameters. All experimentally infected animals appeared to be highly susceptible to the infection by Haemonchus contortus and the severity of the haemonchosis was clearly related to the infective dose.

The relationship between haemoglobin polymorphism and haematological pattern were studied in Gentile di Puglia, the Apulia Merino native breed. In a sample of 292 individuals, on five different farms, alpha- and beta-globin genetic polymorphism was investigated. A remarkable polymorphism was detected especially at alpha-globin gene where the variations concerned both the quality of the gene product and gene expression. Triplicated and quadruplicated alpha-globin genes were observed in 8.6% and 1.2% of the alpha-haplotypes respectively. At beta-globin (HBB) locus, predominance of HBB(B) allele was found in all flocks, while HBB(A) overall frequency was around 11.2%. Moreover, the effect of genotypes at globin systems on haematological data was evaluated on 289 animals. A significant effect was detected for HBB locus on haematocrit (HCT) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV), with decreasing HCT and MCV for decreasing number of HBB(A) alleles in the genotype. The opposite trend was observed for mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration. The advances presented by this paper give reasons for inferring that BB genotypes can be expected to be more resilient to climatic stress and to local parasites.

The number of Eimeria oocysts per gram faeces (OPG) and number of gastrointestinal nematod (GIN) eggs per gram faeces (EPG) depend on some factors such as gender, season and production systems. In order to determine the Eimeria infection and some gastrointestinal nematode burdens in Maltese, Gökçeada and Turkish Saanen goats, OPG, EPG and packed cell volume (PCV) were investigated. Maltese breed tended to have lower parasite burden than other goat breeds (P≤0.05). In the first observation, the prevalence of Eimeria and nematodes was 100% in Gökçeada breed, while the prevalence of Eimeria and the prevalence of GIN infection were 98% and 78%, respectively, in Maltese. It was determined that OPG and EPG burdens were significantly affected by the age of goats and the sampling date (P≤0.0193). It was seen that OPG burden decreased as the goats get older (P= 0.0157), while EPG value varied by the age of a goat in an unsteady manner (P<0.0001). The PCV values determined in the breeds ranged from 0.23 to 0.31. Statistically significant and positive correlation coefficients were determined between OPG and EPG r= 0.20 (P= 0.0036), and between the PCV value and OPG r= 0.41 and PCV and EPG r= 0.37 (P<0.0001).
