Changes in Exposure to Neighborhood Characteristics are Associated with Sexual Network Characteristics in a Cohort of Adults Relocating from Public Housing

Abstract: Ecologic and cross-sectional multilevel analyses suggest that characteristics of the places where people live influence their vulnerability to HIV and other sexually-transmitted infections (STIs). Using data from a predominately substance-misusing cohort of African-American adults relocating from US public housing complexes, this multilevel longitudinal study tested the hypothesis that participants who experienced greater post-relocation improvements in economic disadvantage, violent crime, and male:female sex… Show more

“…34 It is also plausible that economic deprivation, that often characterizes post-incarceration reintegration, limits men's housing options and thus leads them to live in areas of high STI prevalence-increasing their likelihood of sexual exposure to networks embedded within those areas. 35,36 There is also evidence that incarceration disrupts stability in men's sexual partnerships. [37][38][39] One potential consequence of this disruption is an increase in casual sexual partnerships and concomitant increases in the likelihood of exposure to STIs.…”

“…In addition, the analyses examined individual and interpersonal predictors of risk patterns over time. It is possible that other multilevel factors, as informed by the SEF, such as neighborhood-level attributes, may also play an important role in women's HIV risk over time (44). …”

“…26 We used a measure of alcohol outlets by ZCTA based on licensing information obtained from the Georgia alcohol board (U.S. Census Business Patterns, 2013). To create the density of alcohol outlets, alcohol outlet (supermarkets, convenience stores, gasoline stores, or pharmacies) count was divided by the total area in square miles for each ZCTA.…”
