Changes in CD4+CD8/CD4CD8+ Ratio and Humoral Immune Functions in Vitamin B12-Deficient Rats

Abstract: To clarify the role of vitamin B12 in the function of cell-mediated and humoral immune functions, the splenocytes expression of CD4, CD8 and serum C3, IgM, IgG concentrations were examined in vitamin B12-deficient rats, and the effect of the administration of methylcobalamin was also studied. The CD4+CD8-/CD4-CD8+ ratio in splenocytes was significantly higher in vitamin B12-deficient rats than in control rats (p < 0.05). The value in the 48 hours after methylcobalamin administration group, was within the norma… Show more

“…Two studies reported that serum C3, IgG, and IgM levels declined in vitamin B 12 -deficient rats and this decline was restored after vitamin B 12 administration [14,15] . Our patients also showed a significant increase in serum levels of C3, IgG, IgA, and IgM, and a slight elevation in C4 level after vitamin B 12 treatment.…”

“…Vitamin A deficiency has also been shown to reduce the CD4 ϩ cell proportion in humans (39). A few in vivo studies showed a decrease in CD8 ϩ cell population with deficiencies in vitamin D (40), vitamin E (41), and vitamin B12 (42)(43)(44). Interestingly, vitamin B12 plays an important role in DNA metabolism and B12 deficiency can cause uracil misincorporation into DNA by the same mechanism as folate deficiency…”

“…Nutritional status was assessed by anthropometry and by the presence of signs of nutritional deficiencies (51) . Due to funding limitations, serum biochemical analyses for vitamins A, B 12 , riboflavin, Fe and Zn were performed only at baseline and the end of year one for Cohort I. Analytical methods used have been fully described previously (52) . Stool samples were examined for intestinal ova and parasites using the formal-ether sedimentation method and Lugol's stain (53) .…”

“…Children with severe protein-energy malnutrition often have high case fatality rates, particularly from measles, pneumonia, diarrhoea, malaria and tuberculosis (2,4) . Deficiencies of Fe, Zn, vitamin A and vitamin B 12 can impair cell-mediated immunity and granulocyte function, resulting in disruption of anatomic barriers to pathogens (10)(11)(12)(13)(14) . Multiple micronutrient fortification of milk has been shown to reduce instances of pneumonia, diarrhoea, measles and high fever (15) .…”
