Changes in Bronchial Reactivity in Asthmatic Children After Treatment with Beclomethasone Alone or in Association with Salbutamol

Abstract: Airway inflammation is consistently present in patients with severe asthma. The combination of inhaled steroids and bronchodilators may be useful both for treating symptoms and improving the underlying inflammatory condition. We have compared the effect of beclomethasone dipropionate (BDP) combined with salbutamol (S), BDP alone, and placebo, on the severity of bronchial responsiveness in 30 children with allergic asthma during the period of specific allergen exposure. In children treated with BDP alone, PC20-… Show more

“…However, the subjects used frequent inhalations of rescue β 2 agonist throughout the study making the results difficult to interpret in terms of a possible drug interaction. A small study of salbutamol and beclomethasone in asthmatic children found no significant difference between the effects of combined treatment and beclomethasone alone on methacholine responsiveness although, as in the present study, there was a trend to greater benefit from the combination 18. In contrast, two earlier studies of regular β agonist treatment do not suggest a positive interaction with inhaled corticosteroids.…”

“…Reference tracking of the GINA guideline, systematic reviews and included references did not yield additional references. Twenty-three trials, conducted between 1984 and 2010, met the inclusion criteria and were included [6-10,19-36]. Additional file 4 shows the study characteristics of the 23 trials with 4,129 patients ranging in age from 4 to 18 years; we included 6 trials with a lower age range of 4 years, but with a mean or median between 5 and 18 years [6,9,29,31,32,36].…”

“…The difference the change in PC20 between the BDP and the placebo group was used for calculation of sample size [7]. Using the methacholine PD20 as end point, Kerrebijn et al [8] compared the effects of terbutaline (2000 gg daily) and budesonide (400 gg daily).…”
