Changes in Body Composition during the Initial Hours of Life in Breast-Fed Healthy Term Newborns

Abstract: Newborns usually lose 5–10% of their initial weight during the first 4 days of life. Our aim, using bioelectrical impedance (BI), was to study the body composition of healthy term newborns and the nature of the changes which accompany this physiological weight loss. Forty-three healthy term newborns, all with adequate weight for their gestational age, were studied during the first 3 days of life. Weight and BI were taken on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd days of life, always at the same time of the day. Total body wate… Show more

“…Age-and gender-specific densities of FFM are computed based on the data of Fomon et al (7). For infants up to 6 d old, this FFM density calculation also takes into account reported fluctuations in hydration level (26). FM and FFM are computed from weight and % body fat.…”

“…Studies in preterm and term infants have shown it to predict TBW accurately [39,40,41]. However, the rapid fluxes in TBW in preterm and newborn infants mean that its ability to accurately predict body composition in terms of FFM and FM is limited.…”
