Changes in Blood Components in Aphtha Patients with Excess Heat

Abstract: “Superior heat” is a popularization expression in TCM heat syndrome and has no counterpart in the modern medical system concept. Oral ulcer is considered to be a kind of clinical manifestation of “superior heat.” Aphtha is a common and frequently occurring disease, which can be divided into excess heat and Yin deficiency. The aphtha of excess heat manifests the syndromes of acute occurrence, severe local symptoms, obvious swelling and pain, red tongue, yellow coating, and fast-powerful pulse. In this study, we… Show more

“…Main symptoms of heat syndrome are manifested on the head and face, including aphtha, oral ulcer, glossitis, and swollen gums. A few researchers have explored the major manifestations of TCM heat syndrome, such as oral ulcer [6], but the biological essence of heat syndrome is not completely understood yet. In the study, AZC herbs were used to set up heat syndrome rat model [5, 7], and we observed manifestation of heat syndrome.…”

“…Aphtha is a common and frequently occurring disease related to the immune system; it can be divided into excess heat and Yin deficiency in TCM. Qin et al [53] found abnormal immune regulation in aphtha patients induced by excess heat, such as abnormal serum protein expression (interleukin-4 (IL-4), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-19, MMP-9, and activin A) and a higher percentage of CD4+ CD25+ regulatory T cells (Treg cells) in the peripheral blood lymphocytes, with obvious swelling and pain, red tongue, and yellow coating.…”

“…This syndrome classi cation enables individualized treatment clinically. Herbs for excess-heat syndrome of RAS mainly involves fructus forsythia, folium isatidis, radix scutellariae, rhizoma coptidis, and for yinde ciency syndrome mainly involves herba asari, radix rehmanniae, cortex phellodendri, radix ophiopogonis, cortex cinnamomi, and other herbs [8]. The treatment in RAS based on syndrome differentiation has won the international acceptance, but the molecular mechanism of difference syndrome still remains unclear.…”
