Changes in bird assemblages in a wetland ecosystem after 14 years of intensified cattle farming

Abstract: Human activities have modified wetlands all over the word. Water control structures that are frequently implemented in these ecosystems to keep lands free of flooding can decrease or degrade habitat for biodiversity. The Paran a River Delta, one of the largest wetlands in Argentina, has recently experienced rapid cattle grazing intensification facilitated by water control structures, resulting in extensive conversion of wetlands to pastures. It is unclear if this loss of wetlands has had a negative impact on t… Show more

“…Based on the results, specialist birds were rarely found in habitats contaminated with waste because specialist birds tend to occupy higher-quality habitats. This was consistent with previous studies that showed a decline of specialist-bird abundance in disturbed habitats (Sica et al 2018). Further research needs to be carried out to explain the tolerance limits of specialist bird species to environmental disturbances, particularly to waste.…”

“…Based on the observation, inorganic waste was found in almost all observation locations except Muara Angke Arboretum. Bird species belong to specialist groups such as Mycteria cinerea were rarely found in habitats polluted by inorganic waste [56,36]. This is in line with the results of observations, where Anhinga melanogaster and Mycteria cinerea were recorded at observation points with the absence of waste.…”
