Accurate and reliable medical laboratory test results are essential for correct patient diagnosis and management. This is however influenced by many preanalytical, analytical, and post-analytical factors. A general problem faced by most clinical laboratories is the inability to timely process all blood samples received due to overwhelming workload, reagents stock-outs, and equipment breakdown, necessitating storage which predisposes analytes to deterioration. To ensure accurate results from stored samples, the determination of the stability of the analytes under various environmental conditions and storage periods is important in informing acceptable sample handling and storage. This study was designed to experimentally observe changes and evaluate the stability of eleven biochemical analytes in serum samples from 20 randomly sampled healthy volunteers stored at room temperature over 24 hours at Kericho County Referral Hospital laboratory. 10mls of venous blood was drawn from each volunteer, serum was separated and five aliquot sets were prepared. Analysis was done on a set immediately, at 2, 4, 8, and 24 hours, to determine the concentration of the selected analytes on Human Star 100 chemistry analyser. Student pair T-test and Wilcoxon rank were used to analyse the data. Chloride, Creatinine, Glucose, Potassium, Sodium, Urea, Alkaline Phosphatase, Alanine Amino Transferase and Aspartate Amino Transferase registered stability up to 24 hours, with mean percentage differences less the respective calculated reference change value of 4.54, 35.97, 13.14, 10.89, 2.16, 32.15, 16.48, 42.25 and 42.52. Direct and total bilirubin showed stability only up to 2 and 4 hours, respectively, with mean percentage differences of -2.6 and 1.07 against respective calculated reference change values of 1.14 and 0.675 in the subsequent analysis. This study recommends immediate analysis of serum for total and direct bilirubin, while electrolytes, enzymatic analytes and other metabolic waste and substrates can be analysed within 24 hours without extra storage precautions. If testing is delayed, then effective storage including a dark room, refrigeration, or freezing, should be applied to maintain analytes stability for reliable results.

Divya e Jayavardhanan (2011) avaliaram amostras de soro de búfalos e reportaram que a concentração de TGP é estável sob refrigeração a 4 ºC por um período de 14 dias, mas instável a temperatura ambiente, apresentando diminuição contínua da concentração, enquanto TGP apresentou concentração estável por 11 dias sob refrigeração a 4 ºC e por 8 dias em temperatura ambiente.…”

A garantia da qualidade é o mecanismo que propicia ao laboratório de análises clínicas apresentar resultados confiáveis adequados e corretamente interpretados. Na rotina de trabalho desses laboratórios, utilizam-se calibradores, que são padrões conhecidos com características quantitativas e/ou qualitativas determinadas, os controles podem ser utilizados para medir alguns parâmetros de qualidade laboratorial. A depender dos fabricantes, existem algumas sugestões de manuseio a ser seguido, para então, obter maior fidedignidade de aferição. O desempenho do calibrador pode ser afetado por erros de reconstituição, de homogeneização, armazenamento incorreto, contaminação da água ou vidraria. Dessa forma, este trabalho avaliou a estabilidade de controles comerciais submetidos a temperaturas diversas encontradas em situações reais de laboratório, como a refrigeração entre 4-8 ºC, exposição sob bancada de trabalho, a temperatura ambiente, e armazenada dentro de um automóvel, em temperaturas de 60-80 ºC, por períodos de 1 a 12 dias. Tanto o tempo quanto a temperatura em que as alíquotas são armazenadas não ocasionaram alterações nesse produto (exceto para a creatinina, apresentou-se instável no 12º dia do estudo), apresentando valores dentro das faixas estimadas, e possivelmente as alíquotas fora das faixas estimadas devem-se a erro sistemático.

Sleeping Gazelles: High Profits But No Growth

Among 104,231 limited liability firms in Sweden with at least two employees during 1997-2010, almost 10% did not hire new employees in any given 3-year period despite having high profits. Nearly half of these firms continued to have high or medium profits in the next threeyear period, but still no growth. Regression analysis indicates that these firms were not randomly distributed; rather they were small and young, did not belong to an enterprise group, and operated in local markets with high profit-opportunities. We conclude that it might be more beneficial to focus policy towards these firms instead of towards a few high-growth firms that, having just grown exponentially, may not be best positioned to grow further.
