Change of Various Characteristics between Spawning and Non-spawning Season in Diploid and Induced Triploid Far Eastern Catfish, Silurus asotus

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences fatty acids and hormonal parameters in the spawning and non-spawning season between the diploid and induced triploid Far Eastern catfish, Silurus asotus. The measured triploids were produced by cold shock for 50 min at 4℃ in May 2014, the spawning season of diploid was in May, and the non-spawning season was designated in January. Estradiol and testosterone and gonadosomatic index of diploid were higher than those of induced triploid in spawning seaso… Show more

“…And the fish is nocturnal so it active night and it is carnivorous fish so it mostly predates not only crustaceans but also aqatic animals. The fish formerly inhabited rivers in Manchuria, Japan, Taiwan, China and Northeast Asia, and elsewhere; and it is widely distributed throughout freshwater systems (Park & Im, 2001; Park et al, 2004, 2017; Gil et al, 2017; Lim et al, 2017). This species is an example of tasty and nutritious food, and has been used as such; it is also widely used in private treatment (Park & Im, 2001; Park et al, 2004, 2017; Gil et al, 2017; Lim et al, 2017).…”

“…Lipid distribution patterns in fish vary widely amongst species (Ackman, ; Kaneko et al, ). Siluriformes species are known to accumulate lipids in myomers and subcutaneous adipose tissues (Fauconneau & Laroche, ; Lim, Gil, & Park, ). However, there is little information on lipid accumulation patterns in the other species used in the present study.…”

“…Upon attaining sexual maturity, these fish begin to experience reduced growth and decreased feeding efficiency ( Choi et al, 1992 ). Therefore, the induction of triploidy offers more rapid growth and added value due to the increased production of larger catfish ( Lim et al., 2017 ).…”

“…Triploidization is a technique used to generate sterile aquatic animals by taking advantage of the incompatibility in pairing the three homologous chromosomes during meiosis I ( Don & Avtalion, 1986 ). This technique has also been used to enhance the productivity of several fish species because of its assumed ability to increase yield by channeling the energy required from gonadal development to somatic growth ( Tave, 1993 ; Gil et al, 2017 ; Lim et al, 2017 ). More importantly, it generates fish that are unable to breed and contribute to the local gene pool if they were to accidentally escape from confinement.…”
