Change in prevalence of restrictive lung impairment in the U.S. population and associated risk factors: the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1988–1994 and 2007–2010

Abstract: Background: Data for the U.S adult population from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were used to evaluate risk factors for a restrictive pattern on spirometry and estimate the change in its prevalence from the 1988–1994 to 2007–2010 sampling periods. Several previous epidemiologic studies used the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease fixed forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) > 0.70 criteria for cla… Show more

“…In this general population‐based study, we estimated factors predicting abnormal PFT among subjects with normal chest radiography. Subjects aged ≥50 years were significantly more likely to have abnormal lung function compared with those 40–49 years of age, which is consistent with other studies from the US NHANES or KNHANES . This could be due to a reduction in chest wall compliance and increased air trapping with aging .…”

“…pattern include female sex, ever smoking cigarettes, diabetes mellitus, advanced age, extremes of body mass (both high and low), and increased central adiposity (7,(15)(16)(17). Globally, a history of tuberculosis (18)(19)(20) and exposure to biomass combustion products (21) have been identified as additional risk factors for PRISm.…”
