Change Detection with GRASS GIS – Comparison of images taken by different sensors

Abstract: Images of American military reconnaissance satellites of the Sixties (CORONA) in combination with modern sensors (SPOT, QuickBird) were used for detection of changes in land use. The pilot area was located about 40 km northwest of Yemen's capital Sana'a and covered approximately 100 km 2 . To produce comparable layers from images of distinctly different sources, the moving window technique was applied, using the diversity parameter. The resulting difference layers reveal plausible and interpretable change patt… Show more

“…Entropy has also been used in political and marketing sciences to analyze uncertainty and variety in the behaviors of societies and organizations [21][22][23]. The entropy of each part of an image and its variation has been used for detecting contours and changes in the image [24], exemplified for detecting the precursors of weather change. Furthermore, the entropies of traffics and of events in computer networks turned out to provide a scalable technique to detect unexpected behaviors and abrupt changes [25,26].…”

“…This point is similar to the use of entropy in marketing, where entropy has been used as an index for the diversity of interests and products [ 54 , 55 , 56 ]. In digital images, the temporal change of entropy for each part of a given image has been used to detect contours and their movements [ 57 ]. Furthermore, entropy in traffic and events in computer networks have been demonstrated to provide a scalable technique to detect unexpected behaviors and abrupt changes [ 58 , 59 ].…”
