Challenging but positive! – An exploration into teacher attitude profiles towards differentiated instruction (DI) in Germany

Abstract: Background Research has highlighted that personal characteristics such as teachers’ attitudes play an important role in the implementation of inclusive education. However, there are only a few studies that have shed empirical evidence on the relationship of attitudes and inclusive teaching approaches, such as differentiated instruction. In this vein, the present study tackles this research gap and aims to explore teachers’ attitudes specifically towards the inclusive practice of DI in Germany. Aims The present… Show more

“…This disparity also signs the struggle to generalize that physics is eligible for differentiated instruction even though differentiated instruction allows for variation in content without losing sight of the curriculum (Levy, 2008). This links belief and the possibility of implementation (Pozas et al, 2020;Letzel et al, 2023). Therefore, there is a demand for effective differentiation during science teacher preparation programs that may support the development of pre-service teachers' DI.…”

“…In connection to the above idea, Letzel et al (2022) highlighted that teachers, especially master teachers, are faced with various challenges but are adept at instilling a positive attitude despite difficulties. These resilience and positive outlook are crucial in maintaining motivation, engagement and fostering a conducive learning environment for students.…”

“…DI in learning has sometimes been applied by some teachers even though they are not aware of it, and there are many positive teacher perspectives on DI (Baumoel & Schmidlein, 2023;Crisologo et al, 2023;Dorfberger & Eyal, 2023). However, research that focuses on the challenges of DI for teachers illustrates that the challenges of DI for teachers are resources (Letzel et al, 2023), making materials and evaluation (Yuen et al, 2023), takes a lot of time (De Jager, 2023;Mardhatillah & Suharyadi, 2023), large class sizes and lack of DI training for teachers (Adare et al, 2023).…”
