Challenges to the Asian academic profession: Major findings from the international surveys

Abstract: It is generally acknowledged that the academic profession plays a decisive role in determining the quality and identity of national higher education systems. Despite massive differences existing in the academic profession many countries in East and South East Asia, formation of the academic profession as part of their higher education systems in the region was modelled on Western patterns in the later part of the 19th century
