Challenges of cuttings transport in micro borehole coiled tubing drilling for mineral exploration

Abstract: Coil tubing (CT) technology has been in use in the oil and gas industry since the 1990s. Since then, the applications of CT have expanded rapidly. Coiled tube drilling can offer more efficient and faster drilling operations resulting in lower operational costs.Micro-borehole CT drilling (CTD) has been used in oil and gas applications and is very attractive as a method for minerals exploration drilling due to the faster drilling i.e. high rate of penetration (ROP) that can be achieved resulting in reduced drill… Show more

“…Different forms of flow patterns may be observed when two or more phases flow simultaneously [2]. In pipe cross-sections, unpredictable turbulent flow structures generating highly asymmetric volume distribution are a challenge in experiential investigations [4,5]. This kind of unstable flow condition complicates the measurement process and may create difficulties in capturing actual flow conditions.…”

“…However this technology transfer from oil and gas needs modifications to be applicable for mineral exploration. The challenges and recommended solutions for this technology transfer have been addressed in many investigations (Kamyab et al, 2012(Kamyab et al, , 2013a(Kamyab et al, , 2013bRoufail et al, 2013;Mokaramian et al, 2012a;Mokaramian et al, 2012b).…”
