PurposeThis paper aims to assess the performance of achieving the targets of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by aligning with the recent initiatives taken by different ministries and divisions in Bangladesh. It also examines the institutional challenges associated with the implementation of SDGs.Design/methodology/approachBoth primary and secondary data were analysed by applying different techniques. The initiatives taken by various ministries and divisions of Bangladesh resonated partially with 84 targets of SDGs.FindingsAmbiguous mandates of different ministries and divisions have caused overlapping jurisdiction, followed by conflicts of interest and lack of cohesion. Inaccurate stakeholder analysis, data unavailability, lack of competency and accountability, and a top-down policy approach can be considered as the major institutional bottlenecks in achieving SDGs.Originality/valueThis paper advocates revising the map to incorporate the right stakeholders to avoid erroneous monitoring, evaluation, and finally, inaccurate reporting. The reallocation of business for ministries and divisions is warranted to abolish jurisdictional overlapping and conflict of interests and make SDGs friendly. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic recession, Bangladesh may be able to multiply its achievement with the same resources and efforts by addressing those drawbacks.

This study attempts to investigate how customers view organic food. This essay also tries to investigate the issues with promoting organic farming. Lack of knowledge about organic technology and consumer distrust of goods and advertising strategies are among the important problems. It is discovered that a variety of factors affected people's decisions to buy organic food. Health and environmental awareness were positively correlated with educational attainment. The majority of consumers expressed interest in learning more about the production of organic foods, and it is evident that organic agriculture might lessen the harmful effects of chemical agriculture. The majority of customers expressed a lack of trust in organic food products by being unwilling to pay more for quality assurance and organic certification. Furthermore, there is a significant opportunity to meet the local demand for organic food, notably on the vast agricultural acreage in Rajshahi. Rajshahi has the chance to increase organic food production thanks to the lower wage, which will afterwards lead to the creation of good jobs. The barriers to the growth of the organic markets were recognized as ignorance, ecological consciousness, consumer trust, accreditation, quality control mechanisms, current technology, information literacy, storage capabilities, and crop insurance. The agricultural market chain, which is made up of many intermediary organizations, is also vulnerable. A big benefit of producing organic products that require meticulous care is the accessibility of cheaper labor forces.

The study strived to assess the performance of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change in achieving environmental sustainability in Bangladesh. The overarching pitfalls, shortcomings, and associated challenges were critically examined. The research used both primary and secondary data, which was collected following several research approaches. It was found that the Ministry is actively working to achieve 25 targets of SDGs. Nothing is mentioned about climate change in its mandates though it is nodal Ministry in climate adaptation and mitigation. Due to its ambiguous and viscous mandates, jurisdictional overlapping followed by the conflict of interests has been created in many other ministries and divisions. In SDGs mapping, this Ministry's role in achieving food security and responsible consumption have been downplayed. According to key informants' perception, it could not garner the community’s support in conservation initiatives. On the other hand, due to drawbacks in the legal framework, environmental justice could be ensured on an equal basis. No noticeable activities were observed that can achieve the targets 2020, agreed under the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), as part of the set of Aichi Biodiversity Targets. The Ministry could not establish any reliable database through which ecological, carbon, and green footprints can be measured. Correspondingly, Bangladesh Forest Research Institute cannot carry out need-based and world standard research activities. Institutional and legal reform is advocated to expedite the actions to achieve environmental sustainability. The study recommends enhancing the capacity of the Ministry.
