Challenges in the Forecasting of Severe Typhoon Koinu in 2023

Yu-Heng He,
Pak-Wai Chan

Abstract: Hong Kong was under the direct hit of Severe Typhoon Koinu (2314) on 8 and 9 October 2023, necessitating the issuance of the Increasing Gale or Storm Signal, No. 9. Koinu was a very challenging case for TC forecasting and warning services due to its compact size and erratic movement over the northern part of the South China Sea. This paper reviews the difficulties and challenges of the forecasting aspect of the severe typhoon. The predicted tropical cyclone track and intensity from both conventional models and… Show more

“…However, it re-intensified again into a severe typhoon with intensity of 85 knots when it tracked southwestward over the northeastern part of the SCS. Some observations of Koinu are summarised in [56]. Its circulation became increasingly more compact when it moved across the northern part of the SCS, with the radius of gale-force winds decreasing from around 280 km to 85 km when it came close to Hong Kong.…”
