Challenges in designing digital interfaces for the study of multimodal phenomena

Abstract: The paper discusses the challenges faced by researchers in developing effective digital interfaces for analyzing the meaning-making processes of multimodal phenomena. The authors propose a social semiotic approach as the underlying theoretical foundation, because interactive digital technology is the embodiment of multimodal social semiotic communication. The paper outlines the complex issues with which researchers are confronted in designing digital interface frameworks for modeling, analyzing, and retrieving… Show more

“…Finally, we must consider that MR is not limited to visual interfaces, but it may also occasionally include audio and haptic feedback, and due to its interdisciplinary nature, every application and area has different concerns and needs [40]. This way, general information design principles might be proposed but detailed analysis is still needed for each case.…”

“…Although we might find several case studies in literature, few researches investigate how this technology is being used. Some researches propose guidelines with respect to technical characteristics of the display [36], others consider human-computer interaction principles [37,38], some analyse the representation of the environment [39], while other focus on interface issues [40]. Information design issues and their relations with MR, however, remain mostly unexplored.…”
