Challenges for modelling and integrating environmental performances in concept design: the case of an automotive component lightweighting

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to discuss the main barriers for modelling and integrating the environmental performances in the automotive concept design. Incorporating environmental assessment in the early design phase of a vehicle component is known as an important challenge that car makers need to face in order to develop more sustainable design solutions; in this regard, the Life Cycle Assessment is the most widespread methodology for the environmental assessment and comparison of alternatives. The present… Show more

“…Exergetic evaluation of H 2 FC buses have also been conducted [16]. Work on effects of light weighting has also been performed for automotive applications [17,18] as well as dealing with the challenges for modelling and integrating of light weighting into concept design [19]. However, there are no studies available on the effects of light weighting in relation to buses in general and H 2 FC buses in particular.…”

“…Automotive manufacturers have been adopting various technical strategies to address and comply with the legislation requirements. Among these technical strategies, aero-dynamical improvements, enhancement of powertrain efficiency, as well as the adoption of alternative propulsion systems and weight reduction continue to be investigated [5]. Research is focusing on the weight reduction of automobiles to address the pollution levels attributable to road transport.…”

“…Different researchers have demonstrated the feasibility of such a transition to lighter alloys, polymer composites and hybrid materials, even though some aspects of their environmental impacts have yet to be investigated [4,8]. Among the strategies that can be adopted to pursue the same scope, the most effective is the re-designing of vehicle parts, combined with material substitution [5].…”

“…On the other hand, any LCA study is highly influenced by the dataset used to develop the assessment (i.e. in this paper authors provided a study that involved a high number of components [25,26], materials and machining for a single product since its concept design [27,28]), IOP Publishing doi:10.1088/1757-899X/1275/1/012005 2 and it is not easy to manage a large set of data. To support the green design, the idea developed in this paper is to design and realize a simpler database that can be used as a gross dimensioning tool.…”
