School learners and educators encounter several crises on a regular basis, which can lead to various maladaptive behaviours, leaving the individual feeling numb, overwhelmed, and hopeless with decreased energy levels. Therefore, it is vital for a team to be allocated in schools that are well prepared to intervene to create a safe and healthy school environment. This qualitative document analysis aimed to develop a model for crises containment management in South African schools by combining findings from two recently published research studies. The researchers focused on identifying themes and placing themes in logical order to ensure that the developed model is related to other models, transparent and easy to interpret, easily understandable, and adaptable to various school contexts. The findings of this qualitative document analysis concluded the following themes: threats to school safety; impact of crises; management of crises; and Covid-19 mitigation. Based on these themes, steps were developed for the proposed model for crises containment management in South African schools. These steps include: assessing the safety and the situation; stabilising the environment; reflecting on facts, needs and support structure; referring (if needed); and checking-in on self and the individual in need. It is imperative that South African school learners, educators, and support staff need to be trained to handle various crises, for they are the first responders in most cases.

School have different departments and offices with interrelated functionalities that needs one’s cooperation in order to function well. Offices are scattered across the campus and transfer of information is affected. The need to build an integrated School Management System using a centralized database will make school services of better quality. The need to integrate technologies like barcodes, use of internet, video cameras, sensors and the use of a better framework are needed to cope up with the changing needs of the society and in providing quality school service. Thus this study aimed to build such system, implement the system and identify the level of acceptability. Features of the system include enrollment, assessment, report generation and providing decision support module. The system is based from a standardized school management framework derived from different existing school management systems. This is under qualitative as well as descriptive research. Agile AWE model is used in the project development. This is implemented in an institution that uses manual process of school management. Manager, staff, teachers, students and guardian will provide the needed system requirements and at the same time they will be the respondents in getting the level of acceptability. Feedbacks are continuously gathered and helps identify possible improvements. This system is beneficial to institutions currently using manual process in their departments. This is a fully functional and configurable system that will suit to the needs and surely provide quality service.

Exploring Educators’ Perception on learner’s right affecting discipline in Secondry Schools

The aim of this study was to investigate educator’s perceptions of how learners’ rights to safety affect disciplinary procedures in secondary schools in the Umbumbulu Circuit of KwaZulu-Natal. The paper adopted a qualitative approach, where semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from 10 purposively selected educators. The thematic analysis technique was employed to analyse the data. The main findings of the study indicated that educators had their own perceptions of how learners’ rights to safety affect the way they attend to disciplinary issues when a learner has transgressed. The educators’ perceptions of learners’ rights to safety affect disciplinary procedures for many reasons, including poor understanding of relevant education laws and policies. The results also showed that teachers think that the legislation guiding teaching and learning, as well as disciplinary procedures, are marred with contradictions, which make discipline management not only difficult, but also exposes both the learners and the educators to unsafe environments. The study also indicated that the teachers are sensitive to learners’ rights to safety, resulting in restricted attention to learners who are guilty of an offence in the school. In light of these findings, it was recommended that there should be a mandatory continuous in-service workshop for the educators, on how learner discipline can be maintained.
