As WSNs combine with a diversity of next-generation technologies, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have gained considerable attention as a promising ubiquitous technology. Even though several studies on WSNs are being undertaken, few systematically analyze the security issues relating to them. Moreover, recent systems tend to be implemented without sufficient consideration about owns security requirements, which can lead to lethal threats. Systems that do not consider security requirements may provide attackers the opportunity to reduce the overall efficiency and performance of the system. This means that inadequately applied security requirements can result in defective security of systems. Therefore, in this study, we emphasized the importance of security requirements to raise awareness regarding them. In addition, we analyzed literature that could be improved by including WSNs security requirements such as characteristics, constraints, and threats. Furthermore, we adopted a systematic methodology by referring to reliable literature and performed a different analysis from previous studies. We derived and mapped the different security factors based on the literature and illustrated the relationships of each security factor. Finally, our research compared with studies of a similar type to evaluate whether it provided a significant contribution. In other words, in this study, we analyzed various factors related to WSNs security based on reviewing the literature and show our contribution, such as a systematic analysis framework and factor mapping compared with traditional studies. Though there are some considerations, we expect that this research derived the essential security requirements in any WSNs environments. With the advances in technology, there has been an increasing interest from researchers and industrial institutions in the use of underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs). Constrained by the open acoustic channel, harsh underwater environment, and their own particularities, UWSNs are vulnerable to a wide class of security threats and malicious attacks. However, most existing research into UWSNs has not taken security into consideration. Moreover, the existing relatively mature security mechanisms for WSNs cannot be directly utilized in UWSNs. For these reasons, this article aims to present a comprehensive overview of the particularities, constraints, attacks, challenges and current security mechanisms of UWSNs. In addition, challenging, open and hot research topics are outlined.

Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSN) is widely used in variety of applications but none of the applications have taken network security into considerations. Deployment of underwater network is a challenging task and because of the hash underwater environment, the network is vulnerable to large class of security attacks. Recent research on underwater communication focuses mainly on energy efficiency, network connectivity and maximum communication range. The nature of underwater sensor network makes it more attractive for the attackers. One of the most serious problems in underwater networks is wormhole attack. In this research work we concentrate on providing security to the underwater network against wormhole attacks. We introduce the wormhole attack in the network and propose a solution to detect this attack in underwater wireless networks. Energy Efficient Hybrid Optical-Acoustic Cluster Based Routing Protocol (EEHRCP) is incorporated and using the round trip time and other characteristics of wormhole attack, the presence of the wormhole attack in the network is identified. The simulation results depicts that the proposed wormhole detection mechanism increases throughput by 26%, reduces energy consumption by 3%, reduces end to end delay by 13% and increases packet delivery ratio by 3%.
