Challenges and reflections on low female representation in family farming: context of a municipality in the brazilian Northeast

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate, analyze and consider the reality of family farming in the municipality of Passagem, located in the Agreste region of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, specifically with regard to low female representation and gender inequalities. The methodology adopted involved the collection of qualitative and quantitative data through structured interviews, applied to a sample of 97 family units dedicated to agricultural production, covering all thirteen rural communities in Passagem-RN. Data analysis was conducted through tabulation in Microsoft® Office Excel and the application of descriptive statistics using Jamovi® Software. The results revealed a notable lack of female representation in family farming in the municipality, extending to all rural communities. Surprisingly, 74.2% of the interviewees, self-described "family leaders", were male, even when agricultural activities were carried out in collaboration with their wives, who performed, in addition to agriculture, the predominant part of domestic activities.
