“…When women and girls' health is narrowly conceived as SRH, it is easily politicized to the detriment of health and gender equality (Sommer and Forman-Rabinovici, 2020). Several participants noted feeling that the women's health agenda integral to their day-to-day work is regressing or facing signi cant threat from heavy politicization across domestic, state, and international levels, a nding re ected in the literature (Allotey & Denton, 2020). SRH is a key issue that continues to require coordinated efforts to protect the rights of women and girls everywhere, especially amid the threat of severe regression.…”

“…The SDGs and mainstreaming policies have spotlighted gender relations and helped bring equity and equality to the policy agenda (Council of Europe, 1998;United Nations, 1999). However, no country has achieved the goals (Allotey & Denton, 2020). Major challenges, such as preventing sexual violence, continue to persist (Amin, Kismödi & García-Moreno, 2015;WHO, 2020a) and the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a global backlash in all areas of gender equality (Global Health 50/50, 2021;Morgan et al, 2021).…”

“…Intersectoral governance pathways were created on different levels and by a range of diverse stakeholders including public, private and advocacy groups (Table 7.1). Key issues include, for instance, the establishment of "gender mainstreaming" as a global strategy (Allotey & Denton, 2020;United Nations, 1999), the implementation of specific EU and national research programmes and new funding models of "gender budgeting" which connected gender equality goals to financial incentives and shared budgets. Participatory governance and stakeholder engagement were strong elements in some areas (such as maternity care), but poorly developed in most areas of science (Ovseiko et al, 2016).…”

“…The pandemic struck in the year of the 25 th anniversary of the United Nations (UN) Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action that promised prioritization of gender mainstreaming in the policies, practices and programmes of the UN and its agencies [ 6 ]. Beijing set forth a number of strategies that sought to ensure the cross-sectoral integration of gender terminology and responsiveness somewhat assuming the world knew what that might mean in practice [ 7 ]. Even though the Beijing Declaration has been successful in including sex and gender analysis in research, producing knowledge on certain factors affecting women’s health [ 8 ] and raising awareness of the health effects of sex and gender, these still fail to address larger structural causes of health inequality among women.…”
