The study is concerned with how to make learning effective given the change in the education environment due to digitisation and the escalation of open distance learning (ODL) brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Generation Z (Gen-Z) non-accounting students taking accounting courses face challenges and may be demotivated from having to learn subjects they are not inclined toward. These challenges are examined together with their level of motivation. This study provides insight into relevant learning tools incorporating new digital approaches in learning accounting subjects. Understanding Gen-Z learning style may provide input to formulating appropriate teaching delivery and changing teaching methods to suit current generation needs hence contributes towards sustainable and resilient education system to future generation learners. The study seeks to establish relationships between Gen-Z non-accounting students' reaction to challenges, and motivation to learn accounting courses, with ODL's perceived effectiveness. This quantitative study is based on a sample of 265 non-accounting students taking ODL accounting courses. The statistical analyses find that positive students' reaction to challenges faced during ODL leads to better perceived ODL effectiveness. Students' motivation level has no impact on the perceived ODL effectiveness. The digital tools used by students for ODL positively impacts the perceived ODL effectiveness.

Factors predicting participation in higher education in Malaysia

Although Malaysia is moving towards a universal system of higher education, the issue of participation and access is complex. Related research has tended to focus mainly on socio-demographic aspects and less on the personal and social variables preventing people from participating. The study presented here was an attempt to learn more about the young people not participating in higher education in Malaysia, and the personal and social factors that predict their lack of participation. The researchers compared a group of young people who were not in higher education with a group of young people who were. A survey was administered to both groups, focusing on twelve personal and social variables: (1) happiness; (2) life satisfaction; (3) stress; (4) social support; (5) self-esteem; (6) self-efficacy; (7) motivation; (8) aspiration; (9) attitude towards education; (10) knowledge of higher education; (11) experience in school; and (12) perceived barriers. Young people not participating in higher education reported significantly lower levels for all variables except stress. Further analysis of perceived barriers revealed that factors viewed as hindering young people from participating in higher education are wide-ranging, and include previous experience, knowledge of higher education, personal interest, lack of support and other personal issues. Using logistic regression analysis, the researchers found significant predictors of participation in higher education to be stress, social support, self-efficacy, attitude towards education, knowledge of higher education and perceived barriers. The authors discuss their findings in relation to previous research, and offer recommendations with regard to future policy and practical approaches to increase young people's participation in higher education.

Academic entrepreneurial engagement for frugal innovation in higher education institutions: a systematic literature review

Higher education institutions (HEI) are faced with increasing challenges related to shrinking resources, high operation costs, the COVID-19 pandemic, decreasing student enrolment rates, and pressure to contribute to regional development and economic growth. To overcome such challenges, academics must move beyond their traditional functions of research and teaching and engage in entrepreneurial activities. Through engagement in entrepreneurial activities, academics can contribute to frugal innovation (FI) in private HEI (PHEI). The literature in this context emphasizes that academic entrepreneurial engagement (AEE) will lead to innovation, the identification of opportunities for new business ventures, financial rewards for institutions and academics, an impact on the economy, and the enhancement of social welfare. This study presents a systematic review of the literature and adopts the Transfield five-phase strategy to review the literature on AEE from the past two decades (2000–2020). A total of 1,067 papers on FI are obtained, only five of which focus on AEE. Moreover, papers related to AEE for FI are few. The study presents the research gaps, challenges, and potential factors for further research in this context. We conclude that FI for AEE in PHEI can be a game-changer for future sustainability. Moreover, we believe that the outcome of this review warrants further research.
