Challenges and Driving Forces for Business Plans in Biobanking

Abstract: A strategy for optimal utilization begins with sharing of resources, infrastructure, and investments at the planning stage of a biobank, and continues to the transfer of knowledge and know-how by education. For clinical biobanks in particular, a long-term funding and cost recovery strategy is necessary for sustainable utilization.

“…Thus, sustaining the operations of biobanks financially, operationally, and socially requires flexible solutions over time, based on the type of unit established. [9][10][11][12] Underlying the operations of a modern and professionalized biobank is the need for strong business practices, with business planning at its core. Our global survey suggests that organizations that support biobanks have increasingly recognized the need to professionalize their management, staffing, and operations.…”

“…Despite adopting this financial management system, the majority of biobanks are unable to fully recover their costs and have relied on the support of government policies and donations. A possible solution could be supporting biobanks mostly by local public bodies and partially by a cost recovery mechanism in order to favor efficient sustainability [68].…”

“…Embedding a data biobank in clinical care can ensure the collection of high-quality data. 25 The data sharing network will need to design a survey tool for COVID-19 patients and/or research coordinators to complete. All COVID-19 patients and/or the next of kin should sign an informed consent form (ICF); the next of kin should sign when applicable.…”

“…Data sharing is becoming inevitable owing to the collaborative efforts of researchers, pharmaceutical companies, and regulators. 25,26 Large-scale data analyses and the creation of comprehensive databases utilized for the hosting and exchange of genetic and clinical data has allowed researchers to learn and discover more about the pathogenetic mechanisms related to the illness in question, the overall response to drugs, and review of the cause of adverse events. 25,27 Researchers must remember that clinical trials focused on research involving infectious diseases or pandemic causing illnesses will deal with the geographic spread of patients and the high heterogeneity within the same disease (Fig.…”
