Challenges and Design Requirements for Industrial Applications of AC/AC Power Converters without DC-Link

Abstract: AC/AC converters that do not have a DC energy storage element, such as a matrix chopper and a matrix converter, are increasingly becoming alternatives to conventional two-stage AC/DC/AC converters and thyristor choppers. In such systems, the main DC-link capacitor does not exist, so the system provides more reliable operation and makes it possible to reduce the financial costs of its construction. It should be noted that AC/AC converters without an energy storage element in a form of DC-link capacitors have no… Show more

“…Similarly to the mathematical model of CSMC with RL load using the SVM, a mathematical model with Venturini modulation [23] was constructed. This modulation is much simpler because the modulating functions are invariable for set operating conditions and defined by low-frequency modulation functions Equation (8). The average value, for the grid voltage period, of the unbalance voltage u N is zero.…”

“…An alternative to indirect FC is direct FC. The best-known solution for such a system is a direct matrix converter (Matrix Converter (MC)) [7,8]. This converter is made of a matrix of bidirectional switches connected between input and output terminals.…”

“…However, in the practical application, the time delay in the turn-off of one and turn-on of the other device may lead to short-circuiting of DC-link due to momentary simultaneous conduction [11]. To address this problem a blank duration, called dead-time, is inserted between the switching on of the one device and off of the other ensuring safe operation [12]. The effective voltage is affected by the dead time at lower frequencies, which further distorted the inverter output voltage and results in additional components of low-order harmonics.…”

“…From many of the works reported in the specialized literature, it is possible to establish that the correct tuning of these algorithms is the most significant constraint for MC implementation. The central issues are due to the complex calculus required by most of the modulation strategies and the proper synchronization of processes, followed by parallel execution of the gate generation algorithms [29]. However, modern digital devices allow addressing these problems by different reliable means [30].…”
