Chalcidoid parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) ofHypsipyla robusta(Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), a pest of Cedars and Mahogany

Abstract: Twelve species of chalcidoid parasitoids were found parasitizing the eggs and larvae ofHypsipyla robusta, a serious pest of toon (Cedrela toona) and mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) trees in India. These are: Antrocephalus hakonensis, A. hypsiphylae, Brachymeria euploeae, B. hearseyi, B. tachardiae, Kriechbaumerella destructor (Chalcididae); Tetrastichus spirabilis, Trichospilus diatraeae (Eulophidae);Diomorus orientalis (Torymidae); and Trichogramma minutum, Trichogrammatoidea nana andT. robusta (Trichograrnr… Show more

“…The pupal parasitoid Trichospilus diatraeae Cherian & Margabandhu (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) has been reported from species of various lepidopteran families, including Arctiidae (Zaché et al 2012), Geometridae (Pereira et al 2008; Zaché et al 2010;Pastori et al 2012), Nymphalidae (Bou ek 1976), Noctuidae (Paron & BertiFilho 2000), Oecophoridae (Oliveira et al 2005), Pieridae (Kazmi & Chauhan 2003), Pyralidae (Bennett et al 1987;Melo et al 2011) and Riodinidae (Zaché et al 2011). This natural enemy can also parasitize and develop in pupae of Diatraea saccharalis Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) (Paron & Berti-Filho 2000), indicating its potential for use in the biological control of this insect borer of sugar cane.…”

“…pulverea, Hyblea puera, Hypsipyla robusta, Chickrassia sp., Swietenia macrophylla, Sylepta derogata, Thosea assigna and Tarucas theophrastus (Kazmi & Chauhan, 2003). Considering the host range of T. nana, it is possible that the RLF might not be a preferred host or the rice ecosystem might not be a preferred habitat.…”

“…Median ventral projection is distinct but, short with indistinct tubercles (Figure 2). Trichogrammatoidea nana parasitizes on eggs of many micro-lepidopteran insects, such as Corcyra cephalonica and Ephestia cautella (Kazmi and Chauhan, 2003). The eggs of these stored pests thus, could be use as hosts in parasitoid mass-rearing programs.…”
