The production of purposefully fractured stone tools with functional, sharp cutting edges is a uniquely derived hominin adaptation. In the long history of life on earth, only hominins have adopted this remarkably expedient and broadly effective technological strategy. In the paleontological record, flaked stone tools are irrefutable proof that hominins were present at a particular place and time. Flaked stone tools are found in contexts ranging from the Arctic to equatorial rainforests and on every continent except Antarctica. Paleolithic stone tools show complex patterns of variability, suggesting that they have been subject to the variable selective pressures that have shaped so many other aspects of hominin behavior and morphology. There is every reason to expect that insights gained from studying stone tools should provide vital and important information about the course of human evolution. And yet, one senses that archeological analyses of Paleolithic stone tools are not making as much of a contribution as they could to the major issues in human origins research.

Volume 28 No. 1 2015RESUMO O Setor de Antropologia da Universidade Federal do Paraná enviou expedições de pesquisa entre 1956 e 1961 para a região onde foram identificados acampamentos Xetás, coletando informações sobre a cultura material deste grupo. Nestas expedições foram coletados 160 artefatos polidos e lascados que compõem a coleção de lítico Xetá depositada no MAE-UFPR. A partir de informações de contexto deste material, optou-se em dividi-lo em duas subcoleções para fins analíticos e comparativos: os artefatos coletados por Loureiro (sem dados de proveniência) e por Laming-Emperaire (com informações). Este artigo expõe os resultados obtidos com a análise baseada em sequências reducionais do material coletado por Laming-Emperaire em 1961. Os tipos identificados para os Xetás nas poucas publicações, como chooppers e chopping-tools, podem ser associados a outras tradições arqueológicas definidas para região sul, em especial o lítico de grupos ceramistas Proto-Jê e Tupiguarani. ABSTRACTThe Departament of Anthropology from the Federal University of Paraná sent between 1956 and 1961 research expeditions for the area where were identified camps associated with the Xetá group, collecting information about their material culture. In these expeditions were collected 160 polished and chipped artifacts that comprise the collection of lithic Xetá deposited at the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology (MAE-UFPR). Based on the context information of this material, it was decided to divide it in two subcollections for analytical and comparative purpose: artifacts collected by Loureiro (no data provenance) and Laming-Emperaire (with information). This article presents the results obtained from the analysis based on reduction sequence of the material collected by Laming-Emperaire in 1961. The types identified for Xetá in the few publications, as chooppers and chopping-tools, can be associated with other archaeological traditions defined for the southern region, especially the lithic from ceramist groups Proto-Je and Tupiguarani.

RESUMENSe estudia una muestra inédita de fíbulas antiguas de codo lisas, de las consideradas "tipo Monachil", tradicionalmente incluidas en el "grupo sículo" de la Península Ibérica . Se valora su tecnología de elaboración, aleación, tipología y posible cronología . Se comprueba que muestran escasas relaciones con fíbulas de diferentes ámbitos geográficos mediterráneos que, inicialmente, se habían considerado su inspiración . ABSTRACT
