Chagas disease in the 21st Century: a public health success or an emerging threat?

Abstract: Chagas disease, caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is a major public health burden in Latin America and a potentially serious emerging threat to a number of countries throughout the world. Although public health programs have significantly reduced the prevalence of Chagas disease in Latin America in recent decades, the number of infections in the United States and non-endemic countries in Europe and the Western Pacific Region continues to rise. Moreover, there is still no vaccine or highly eff… Show more

“…In this case, after 60 days of treatment, up to 80% of the patients can expect its remission. 4 However, chemotherapy with BNZ presents some drawbacks including the dosage regimen, long treatments, and often appearance of several side effects such as allergic dermatitis, peripheral neuropathy, and anorexia. BNZ exhibits low water solubility, which may produce low and/or variable bioavailability after oral administration.…”

“…Up to 10 million people across Latin America are infected with this protozoan parasite, a distribution range that is expanding driven by migration of infected insects and hosts, with CD now emerging as a public health problem at nonendemic sites (1,2). T. cruzi strains are heterogeneous, exhibiting a high degree of biochemical and genetic variability.…”

“…However, health policies regarding the control of congenital transmission are also lacking in so many non-endemic European countries. 15 In fact, a multidisciplinary approach is essential to address this health problem that is multifaceted, which includes the coordination of various control programs (vector, vertical, blood banks, transplant), and the attention to affected people (primary care, different specialists). Moreover, the decision makers must decide priorities within their competence in face of other health problems and coordinate with professionals working in the field and with the people affected.…”
