Chagas disease: control, elimination and eradication. Is it possible?

Abstract: From an epidemiological point of view, Chagas disease and its reservoirs and vectors can present the following characteristics: (i) enzooty, maintained by wild animals and vectors, with broad occurrence from southern United States of America (USA) to southern Argentina and Chile (42ºN 49ºS), (ii) anthropozoonosis, when man invades the wild ecotope and becomes infected with Trypanosoma cruzi from wild animals or vectors or when the vectors and wild animals, especially marsupials, invade the human domicile and i… Show more

“…The main drugs used against this disease are benznidazole and nifurtimox (2), both of which are effective in curing the disease when administered during the acute phase but are less effective in patients that have progressed to the chronic phase (3). Furthermore, these drugs are not considered ideal, due to severe side effects, and drug resistance to T. cruzi strains has been reported (4).…”

“…The disease is caused by a protozoan called T. cruzi and it is transmitted mainly by the vectors' bite (triatomine insects). 47 However, transmission by blood transfusion can occur, mainly in nonendemic areas. 47 T. cruzi displays a relevant genetic variability shown by at least six discrete typing units (DTUs), from TcI to TcVI.…”
