“…Here, the formative site is located at the dorsal edge of the neuropodial and at the ventral edge of the notopodial chaetal sac (Meyer & Bartolomaeus, ). Principally the same situation has been described from sabellidan species (Bartolomaeus, ; Kolbasova, Tzetlin, & Kupriyanova, ), terebellidan species (Bartolomaeus, ) and capitellid species (Schweigkofler, Bartolomaeus, & von Salvini‐Plawen, ). In arenicolid and maldanid species the formative site is located at the ventral edge of the neuropodial chaetal sac (Bartolomaeus & Meyer, ; Tilic, von Döhren, et al, 2015).…”

“…Two studied species of Caenogastropoda (Mischor & Märkel, ; Vortsepneva et al, ; see Table ) combine the apocrine and microvillar secretion during tooth formation. The tooth shape in T. testudinalis is not determined by microvilli as it was suggested for other gastropods (Runham, ; Wiesel & Peters, ), but by the localization of odontoblasts in the cushions. This is similar to the chaetae in Annelida, which are synthesized by special cells (chaetoblasts) due to microvillar secretion while the shape is determined by its surrounding cells (Bartholomaeus, ; Hausen, ; Kolbasova, Tzetlin, & Kupriyanova, ). We suggest that the final shape of the radular tooth is well‐defined by the folds of the surrounding epithelium (supraradular) and independent of the type of secretion.…”

“…Uncini and hooked chaetae are discriminated by the length of the shaft, although its length is an imprecise character that varies intra- and supraspecifically [ 11 ]. Studies into the chaetogenesis of the hooked chaetae and uncini in certain sedentary polychaetes has revealed that the structure of these chaetae actually results from a uniform formation process (Sabellidae and Serpulidae [ 11 13 ]; Arenicolidae [ 14 , 15 ]; Maldanidae [ 10 ]; Psammodrilida [ 16 ], Terebellida [ 12 , 17 ]; Oweniidae [ 18 ]; Siboglinidae [ 19 ]). One of the major conclusions of these studies is that substructures and course of formation support the homology hypothesis for hooked chaetae and uncini, at least for the taxa studied [ 20 ].…”
