CFD Steady Model Applied to a Biomass Boiler Operating in Air Enrichment Conditions

Abstract: A numerical model is proposed to perform CFD simulations of biomass boilers working in different operating conditions and analyse the results with low computational effort. The model is based on steady fluxes that represent the biomass thermal conversion stages through the conservation of mass, energy, and chemical species in the packed bed region. The conversion reactions are combined with heat and mass transfer submodels that release the combustion products to the gas flow. The gas flow is calculated through… Show more

“…Recently, more advanced pyrolysis models have been developed to consider the complex interactions between the solid fuel, volatile gases, and char. These models include the discrete particle model, the multi-scale model, and the detailed chemistry model [37][38][39][40][41]. The discrete particle model (DPM) is a Lagrangian approach that tracks the individual particles of solid fuel, volatile gases, and char.…”

“…A new method of boiler exergy calculation for estimating the exergy loss and exergy efficiency was studied by Behbahaninia et al [23]. Gomez set up a model to simulate biomass boilers in a different environment and analyzed the results, which showed that an increase in oxygen concentration can reduce CO emissions [29]. In this study, the exergy loss of flue gas is divided into the physical component and the chemical component.…”
