CFD Simulation Based Ventilation and Dust Reduction Strategy for Large Scale Enclosed Spaces in Open Pit Coal Mines—A Case of Coal Shed

Abstract: The coal shed is an enclosed space where raw coal is stored and handled. The intensive operation of the machinery inside the coal shed generates a large amount of dust, and the wind speed inside the enclosed space easily leads to a high concentration of dust, which endangers the physical and mental health of the workers. In this paper, we first studied the particle size distribution of dust samples in the coal shed and found that 12.2% of the dust in the air of the coal shed was 10–100 μm, 87.8% was less than … Show more

“…Using these assumptions and formulas (1)-( 4), CFD model was developed to analyze the wind regime formed by the flow around the MPW. The model is based on the numerical integration of the 2D equation for the velocity potential by the Liebman method [2][3][4].…”

“…Mining companies play an important role in the country's export potential, as well as in the sustainable development of the regions where they are located [1][2][3][4][5]. However, each such enterprise is accompanied by waste storage facilities for mineral processing waste, which are mostly artificial formations on the earth's surface.…”

“…It cannot be solely based on mathematical and mechanical methods for computational representation and evaluation. Instead, it must consider the geological conditions of slopes and rely on sound judgment [18][19][20], and the characteristics of the rock mass itself, are the key to improving the stability of slopes. Chen [21] collected soil samples from the discharge field and performed direct shear tests to obtain the shear strength parameters of the soil body, which provided a theoretical basis for the structural design of the discharge field.…”

“…Some of these large-scale coal mines, including open-pit and underground mines, are being extensively and intensively mined, leading to a variety of environmental problems [18,19]. With the increased emphasis on environmental protection, Ordos City is also actively promoting the greening and sustainability of coal production [19][20][21]. Therefore, it is of great significance to explore the land-cover types and their changes in the open-pit mining area in Ordos City in order to promote the environmental restoration of mines and the construction of green mining areas.…”
