Vortex generators are used to overturn the momentum of the flow in the boundary layer, thereby preventing flow separation, and are broadly used in aviation, wind power, heat exchange, and different fields. It has been determined that the capability of an eddy current generator to manipulate the boundary layer is proportional to the intensity of the vortex strength it excites. Although the mathematical notion of vortex strength is very well defined, there are difficulties in figuring out vortex strength in applications. This article proposes a calculation method based on confidence intervals and contour eddy current intensity. Meanwhile, the contemporary overall performance evaluation of vortex generators is frequently obtained in a roundabout way through their consequences on feature factors (e.g., lift coefficients, etc.), and techniques for the direct assessment of a vortex generator’s overall performance are no longer available. To address this situation, the article derives the performance evaluation criterion of the equal height vortex generators, the harmonic intensity factor (K=ωpeak r′), based on the Biot–Savart theorem.

In the Inner Mongolia region, sand and dust storms are prevalent throughout the year, with sand erosion having a particularly significant impact on the performance of wind turbine blades. To enhance the performance stability of wind turbines and reduce operation and maintenance costs, this study delves into the specific impact of sand-laden wind erosion on the aerodynamic performance of scaled-down wooden wind turbine blades. The experiment conducts vehicle-mounted tests on scaled models of 1.5 MW wind turbine blades that have been eroded by wind-sand flows from different zones, analyzing the changes in aerodynamic performance of wind turbines caused by the erosion. The results indicate that with an increase in the angle of installation, both the overall power output and the wind energy utilization coefficient of the wind turbines show a declining trend. The power outputs of both the partially eroded group and the fully eroded group are unable to reach the rated power level of 100 W. Compared to the uneroded group, the leading-edge eroded group demonstrated higher power output and wind energy utilization coefficients across most wind speed ranges. This finding verifies the possibility that the drag-reducing effect caused by pits from leading-edge erosion has a positive impact on the aerodynamic performance of the blades. It also provides a new research perspective and strong evidence for the study of erosion effects on wind turbine blades and the optimization of their aerodynamic performance.

The development of high-performance wind turbine blade airfoil families is an important research topic in wind power generation technology. Using the NACA63 series airfoil as the initial airfoil, the XFOIL software based on the panel method is used to calculate the airfoil's lift-drag coefficient. Secondly, an improved Hicks-Henne shape function is employed to define the airfoil's geometry. Finally, a single objective optimization model is established based on three optimization algorithms (genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization algorithm, and particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithm), which takes the control coefficient of shape function as a variable, the maximum of lift coefficient and lift-drag ratio as the goal, and satisfies the geometric and aerodynamic constraints. Different angles of attack, Reynolds numbers and weight coefficients are considered, there are seven groups high-performance airfoil families obtained (ZDGN-ASG, ZDGN-ASP, ZDGN-ASPG, ZDGN-ASR1, ZDGN-ASR5, ZDGN-ASQ3, ZDGN-ASQ8). The lift coefficients and lift-to-drag ratios are higher than those of the initial airfoil under the same operating conditions, and have been applied to the actual 1.2MW wind turbine blades. The results show that the output power and wind energy utilization coefficient of the new blades are significantly improved, further proving that the new airfoil family has superior aerodynamic performance.
