CFD Analysis of the Flow around Simplified Next-Generation Train Subjected to Crosswinds at Low Yaw Angles

Abstract: The development of Next-Generation Trains (NGT) made of lightweight materials is a challenging task for the transport industry. It reduces axle loads, which saves money by lowering rail track maintenance costs and the amount of energy needed to drive vehicles. However, the increasing speed and decreasing mass of high-speed trains, on the other hand, raises concerns about the effects of strong crosswinds on their aerodynamics and train stability. As a result, the purpose of this research is to investigate the u… Show more

“…All these advantages, come at a cost. The aerodynamic performance of the train is strongly impacted by its speed, creating issues with operational performance and safety, especially when traveling near a tunnel [3][4][5][6][7][8]. Moreover, moving in the opposite direction of the wind provides a crosswind component on the item, increasing the apparent wind loads on the object [9][10][11].…”

“…Real-life experiments require considerable expense and time to implement and also necessitate the researcher's time sacrifice in order to obtain the desired outcome [20,21]. Using numerical analysis and data structures, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), a subfield of fluid mechanics, analyses and resolves issues involving fluid flows [3].…”

“…Several studies on the effects of crosswinds on heavy ground vehicles have been carried out [5]- [8]. The heavy grounded vehicles such as trains, trucks, and buses since their vast lateral surfaces render them particularly vulnerable to the impacts of crosswind gusts [9]- [11].…”
