Cervical Lymphadenitis Caused by Group D Non-typhoidalSalmonellaAssociated with Concomitant Lymphoma

Abstract: Non-typhoidal Salmonella species are important foodborne pathogens that can cause gastroenteritis, bacteremia, and subsequent focal infections. Non-typhoidal salmonellosis is problematic, particularly in immunocompromised hosts. Any anatomical site can be affected by this pathogen via hematogenous seeding and may develop local infections. However, cervical lymphadenitis caused by non-typhoidal Salmonella species is rarely reported. Herein, we have reported a case of cervical lymphadenitis caused by group D non… Show more

“…Nonetheless, a careful and thorough history coupled with a high degree of suspicion were imperative to diagnose such a case. Previously reported two cases of nontyphoidal Salmonella lymphadenitis in lymphoma patients were described, however, both lymphoma and infection presented concomitantly at initial presentation, which required even a higher degree of suspicion [3,6] . Nontyphoidal Salmonella should be suspected in immunocompromised patients with a suggestive history and disconcerting risk factors.…”

“…Suggested risk factors for nontyphoidal Salmonella infection include age extremes, alteration of bowel fl ora secondary to use of antibiotics, and immunosuppressive medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus, malignancy, autoimmune diseases, HIV infection, or the use of immunosuppressive therapy [2] . Lymphadenitis is an uncommon extra-intestinal manifestation of nontyphoidal Salmonella infection [3] . No cases of lymph node abscess caused by nontyphoidal Salmonella in lymphoma patients were described, to our knowledge, in the Middle East.…”

“…5 Salmonella lymphadenitis is rarely reported in literature, and to the best of our knowledge, only 5 cases of non-typhoidal Salmonella non-enteric lymphadenitis have been reported. [6][7][8][9][10] Campbell found a case of cervical lymphadenitis caused by Salmonella braenderup in a female with Hodgkin's lymphoma. 6 Lim et al reported a case of cervical lymphadenitis caused by group D non-typhoidal Salmonella associated with lymphoma in a 66-yearold woman.…”

“…Salmonella was isolated from a supraclavicular node in a patient with stomach cancer and from an axillary lymph node in a patient with reticulum cell sarcoma [ 17 ]. Salmonella Braenderup was isolated from a cervical lymph node of a patient with Hodgkin's lymphoma [ 18 ], and group D nontyphoidal Salmonella was isolated from a cervical lymph node, positive for diffuse large B cell lymphoma [ 19 ]. In the present case, Salmonella Typhi was isolated from the same lesion containing a metastatic PTC; to our knowledge, this is first case report describing the isolation of Salmonella from a metastatic lymph node associated with PTC.…”
