Cervical Disk Pathology in Patients With Multiple Sclerosis: Two Case Reports

Abstract: Cervical disk disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis when a patient with MS has a history of trauma and displays abnormal postures, spastic weakness, and changes in pain complaints. In these 2 cases, treating the cervical pathology in addition to the MS symptoms provided the most effective approach for functional improvement.

“…Mullen, Wilmarth, and Lowe (2012) said MS patients have disturbances in the neck area, hence the ability of these people to head control decreases and leads to abnormalities in the neck (19). So that, the results of the present study in MS patients compared to healthy subjects, both forward head and torticollis abnormality were significant.…”

“…So that, the results of the present study in MS patients compared to healthy subjects, both forward head and torticollis abnormality were significant. Also, Mullen, Wilmarth, and Lowe (2012) stated in their research that because of muscle imbalance, these individuals are infected with kyphoscoliosis, which results in a lot of pressure on nerves and the results of the present study did not match this abnormality (19); the results of this study showed that this people did not suffer from abnormalities of kyphosis and scoliosis. Another study reported that due to changes in the physical condition as a result of lower interstitial syndrome, it could lead to anterior pelvic tilt, increased lumbar lordosis, and abdominal distension.…”

“…In case of excessive expiratory weakness, cough is inadequate, and secretion clearance is difficult. This leads to respiratory complications, which are the most common cause of morbidity and mortality (21) Many studies have shown that respiratory muscle weakness also develops in later stages of MS (10,20,22). There is evidence in the literature that the decrease in exercise tolerance in patients with multiple sclerosis may be related to respiratory muscle dysfunction (10).…”
