Certification of Beryllium Mass Fraction in SRM 1877 Beryllium Oxide Powder Using High-Performance Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry with Exact Matching

Abstract: High-performance inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (HP-ICP-OES) was used to certify the Be mass fraction in National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Standard Reference Material (SRM) 1877 Beryllium Oxide Powder. The certified value and expanded uncertainty expressed at a 95% confidence level is (0.3576 +/- 0.0024) g/g. To obtain best results, the Be mass fractions, Mn (internal standard) mass fractions, and matrix compositions of the calibration solutions were carefully matc… Show more

“…Four blanks were prepared containing only the reagents required for photolysis (HCl, HNO 3 , H 2 O 2 ). The matrix (HCl and HNO 3 ) matched calibrant and DNA digests are run on the IC instrument in a randomized complete block sequence [24][25][26] which is necessary for the implementation of drift-correction. The randomized block sequence ensures that injections of the calibrant solution are not separated temporarily from injections of the DNA digest, further helping to mitigate analytical bias that might otherwise be caused by instrumental drift.…”

“…A ''high performance'' methodology [22][23][24] developed by researchers at NIST, USA has been used for the measurement of phosphorus using ICP-OES 6,7 and the same has been successfully translated to ion chromatography recently by Winchester and co-workers 25 for high-precision and high-accuracy analyses of phosphate and other anions.…”

“…The final paper relevant to this section was by Winchester et al who reported the determination of the Be mass fraction in SRM 1877 beryllium oxide powder using high performance ICP-OES. 176 The result (including the expanded uncertainty) at the 95% confidence level was found to be 0.3576 AE 0.0024 g/g. The authors found that best results were obtained when Mn was used as an internal standard and when the calibration standards were as closely matched to the samples in terms of both matrix as well as Be and Mn concentration.…”

“…Six-to 8-week-old FVB/N HLA-DP2-Tg mice or WT C57BL/6J, MyD88-KO, TLR9-KO, STING-KO, and MD4-Tg mice were exposed to 50 μl of either sterile PBS or PBS containing 100 μg BeO (NIST, standard reference material 1877; refs. 44,45), via oropharyngeal aspiration as previously described (46) on days 0, 1, and 2. Mice were lightly anesthetized with isoflurane to allow inhalation of sterile PBS or BeO, and a limulus amebocyte assay (Sigma-Aldrich) was performed to confirm that preparations contained less than 20 μg of endotoxin.…”
