Certain investigations on the effect of nano metal oxide finishes on the multifunctional characteristics of cotton fabrics

Abstract: The performance of ultraviolet protection, antimicrobial activity, soil release action and self-cleaning characteristics of nano zinc oxide (ZnO) with acrylic binder were assessed on the cotton fabric using pad-dry-cure method. Different precursors such as zinc chloride and zinc nitrate were used to synthesize nanoparticles by wet chemical technique. The synthesized nanoparticles were then characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, particle size analyser, powder X-ray diffractometry and scann… Show more

“…Recently, interest is focused on the use of ZnO nanoparticles because the decreasing of the size of the particles led to increasing the surfaceto-mass ratio and consequently changing the chemical, mechanical, and optical properties of the fabric (31)(32)(33)(34)(35)(36)(37) . ZnO nanoparticles have excellent UV protective properties but have poor adsorption capacity towards textile materials.…”

“…Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, particle size analyser, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). 12,13 Antimicrobial finish is a requirement on the textile substrate for the protection of the wearer. Textiles generally do not exhibit resistance to bacterial growth.…”

“…Recently, we have been witnessing an increasing interest in the use of ZnO nanoparticles, due to the fact that decreasing the size of the particles increases their surfaceto-mass ratio, consequently changing the fabrics' chemical, mechanical, and optical properties [3][4][5][6]. Moreover, ZnO nanoparticles are an excellent blocker of UV radiation.…”

“…Smaller particles of ZnO offer better protection from harmful UV radiation than larger particles. The application of ZnO nanoparticles to textiles is primarily carried out by means of wet-chemical procedures [3][4][5][9][10][11], using synthetized [3-5, 9, 12-14] or ready-made ZnO nanoparticles [15]. Synthetized ZnO nanoparticles are applied to cotton fabrics by impregnating with a wet pick-up of 100%, drying, and curing or by treating the fabric in a bath for 10 minutes using a magnetic stirrer, drying, and curing [2,4].…”
