Cerium-based UiO-66 metal–organic frameworks explored as efficient redox catalysts: titanium incorporation and generation of abundant oxygen vacancies

Abstract: For the first time, UiO-66(Ce) was endowed with greatly improved redox photocatalytic activity via Ti incorporation, based on the formation of oxygen vacancies.

“…Besides, cerium is a widely investigated rare earth metal due to its high tolerance, low cost and inherent Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ cycling [32]. Literature reports, cerium based UIO-66 metalorganic frameworks explored as effective redox catalysts, titanium incorporation and generation of ambient oxygen vacancies [33]. The stabilizing effect of Ce atom comes from: Soft and hard acid-base (cerium element belongs to hard acid and tends to form chemical bonds with strong base atoms.…”

“…beneficial for the generation of the reductive photoelectrons and oxidative *OH/*O 2 − (Figure 4e). [86] An et al fabricated a Ce 4+ doped UiO-67, based on dianion of biphenyl-4,4′-dicarboxylic acid as linker. [87] The further test of photocatalytic performance indicated that the doped Ce can improve the HER rate from 26.78 to 269.6 µmol g −1 h −1 .…”

“…19 Recently, Ce-based UiO-66 (UiO = University of Oslo)-type MOFs have been reported for to have unique stability and applications. 20 When Ce-based UiO-66(Ce) was employed with TEMPO as an oxidant, the aerobic oxidation of alcohols was accomplished (Scheme 6). Notably, this study investigated the MOF activation method.…”
