Treatment of vinyl acetate with ozone yields the mixed anhydride of acetic and formic acids and formaldehyde oxide. The formaldehyde oxide can be trapped by reaction with ketones yielding the corresponding ozonides. Thermal decomposition of these ozonides gave the corresponding lactone and (or) the corresponding olefin carboxylic acid. The ozonides were also prepared by the ozonolysis of the corresponding olefins.

Ozone reacts very smoothly with acetals to give the corresponding esters. There are six gauche conformations that are theoretically possible for an acetal function. It is shown that only three of them are reactive toward ozone. It is proposed that a reactive acetal function must take a conformation in which each oxygen must have an electron pair orbital oriented antiperiplanar to the C—H bond. The mechanism of this reaction is also discussed.

This paper reviews the catalytic and electrocatalytic oxidation of organic compounds using cerium (IV) salts. Direct and indirect methods and those using modified electrodes are described.Keywords: catalytic oxidation; electrocatalytic oxidation; cerium salts. REVISÃO INTRODUÇÃOA síntese eletroquímica de compostos orgânicos tem sido assunto de investigações laboratoriais desde meados do século XIX. Nos últimos anos, devido principalmente à viabilidade econômica, um grande número de reagentes usados em quími-ca sintética são preparados por métodos eletroquímicos 1 . Estes incluem cloro, soda cáustica, sódio, magnésio e periodatos 2 . A oxidação e a redução eletroquímica em síntese orgânica oferecem outras vantagens importantes sobre os métodos convencionais: condições suaves de reação, as quais freqüentemente garantem uma alta seletividade; utilização do elétron como reagente redox, que conduz a drástica redução dos problemas ambientais; maior eficiência no processo de transformação de matéria-prima; facilidade no processo de separação e isolamento dos produtos.Um dos principais objetivos dos eletroquímicos orgânicos é o de realizar eletrossínteses eficientes, com alto rendimento em produtos e eficiência de corrente, em processos reconhecidamente menos poluentes, mais rápidos, suaves e mais baratos. Muitos processos com estas características são conhecidos com aplicação industrial 3 . Em termos de química sintética, poucas áreas tem presenciado um crescimento tão grande quanto o obtido através da aplicação de reagentes lantanídeos na síntese orgânica. Como testemunho, têm surgido excelentes revisões 4-10 que revelam o interesse na área.Boas revisões sobre cério em síntese orgânica podem ser encontradas, mas a maior parte trata do uso do cério em quantidades estequiométricas para a transformação de substratos orgânicos 11,12,13 . O objetivo deste artigo, longe de esgotar o assunto, é o de levar ao conhecimento do pesquisador com interesse na área de catálise e eletrocatálise orgânica ou áreas afins, informações importantes a respeito do reagente oxidante de cério e sua aplicação em transformações de substratos orgânicos. FUNDAMENTOS BÁSICOS SOBRE O SISTEMA E O REAGENTE REDOX Princípio da Eletrossíntese IndiretaNa reação eletroquímica, a capacidade de reduzir ou oxidar uma determinada espécie eletroativa, através de transferência de elétron, confere uma notável característica para a eletrossíntese orgânica, pois não utiliza reagentes químicos. Nas reações orgâ-nicas convencionais, a reação geralmente ocorre entre reagentes nucleofílicos (N -) e eletrofílicos (E + ). Para que ocorra reação entre reagentes de mesma polaridade seria necessário efetuar a inversão de polaridade do reagente, chamada de Umpolung 14 , de difícil execução em reações orgânicas convencionais.
